Leven Art Society 2021 Programme

Members of the public are very welcome to come to any of the events below marked in blue. Otherwise, The programme information is primarily for members’ use, as the events are generally for members only but if you are thinking of joining us in the future, it might give you an idea of what we do.

Summer events “en plein air”:

Wednesday June 23rd From 1pm until 4 pm Low Green Great Ayton. There is plenty parking, lots of space and alternatives for painting e.g. the river and footbridge, old buildings, the All Saints Churchyard and there is a cafe at the Velvetine Rabbit. The terrain is also flat for getting about.

Wednesday August 11th. 1pm - 4 pm, Kirkleatham Hall Museum and Gardens. Again good parking, flat, a lovely garden and a café.

Wednesday 8th September. 1pm to 4pm, Paddy’s Hole, South Gare. We only had two attend in 2019 when the weather was poor. If we get a good day the choice of subjects is extensive. Take your own picnic.

July has been left out because of the exhibition (see below) and that will be a very busy month.

Annual Exhibition Stokesley Town Hall

Thursday 22th July

9.00am to noon: Set up exhibition.

7.00pm to 9.00pm: Preview evening (for members and invited guests)

Friday 23rd July – Sunday 25th May – The Exhibition is open to the public from 10am to 6pm each day

Provisional Programme for Autumn 2021.

We hope we will be able to go ahead with the programme but, as circumstances may change due to Covid, we will send out the final programme later.

Please note – unless otherwise stated, no charge is made for members to attend sessions.

**Members should bring the appropriate materials to any workshop – a list will be provided if special materials are required.**


Saturday 25th September 2021 at Stokesley Town Hall from 1.30pm till 4.00pm

The AGM meeting will take place in the main hall.  All members welcome.


Saturday 2nd October 2021 at Kirkby Church Hall – from 10am till 4 pm

A Celebration of 50 years of Leven Art Society

We are delighted to have locally born artist, McKenzie Thorpe, visiting us to share the day with us all.  Members are invited to bring a special painting of their own to display round the room.  Throughout the day, Mackenzie will talk about his work and will do a critique on some of our paintings.  There will be a buffet lunch.  Members will have a chance to talk about their memories of their years in the Society.  (More details on the Exhibition Newsletter)

Saturday 16th October at Kirkby Church Hall – from 10 am til 4,00 pm

Cath Inglis is coming again to see us.  This time, Cath will be demonstrating a pastel painting of a dog (Dixie) in the morning.  The workshop in the afternoon will be limited to 15 to18 – please book early for a place.


Saturday 30th October 2021 at Kirby Church Hall – from 10 am till 4pm

Peter Woolley is coming to paint a landscape, using watercolours, in the morning with a workshop in the afternoon.  Numbers for the workshop are limited so please book early. (15 – 20)


Saturday 13th November 2021 at Kirkby Church Hall -  from 10am till 4pm

Lee Rotherforth, who you may have seen on Sky’s Portrait of the Year, is coming to paint in the morning and run a workshop in the afternoon.  Lee paints his portraits on all sorts of things – old pieces of wood, doors etc.  Numbers for the workshop are limited so please book early for a place (15 –20)


Saturday 27th November 2021 at Christ Church Hall, Great Ayton  from 1.30pm till 4.00pm

Garth Bayley, a local artist, will demonstrate a landscape using inks/watercolour.  Please bring your equipment as there may be time after the demo for you to do a painting of your own.


Saturday 11th December 2021 at Kirkby Church Hall from 1.30 till 4.00pm.

Graeme Bell, one of our members, will demonstrate a painting entitled “Reflections” using pastels.  There may be time for members to paint a picture too so bring your pastels (or paints).
